Through the years people have come up with new styles of dressing which other people then emulate, making it fashion. This happens all over the world as designers and stylists are showcasing their creativity in their profession. Fashion is influenced by many things in the world including music from different genres; we can see from the early ages of hip-hop that fashion was being influenced by it. Hip-hop is basically the main genre of music which is going to be focused on and how it has influenced fashion over the years up to now.

Hip hop began over 35 years ago in the Bronx, New York City. Since then, the genre of music has grown massively and is still alive today. According to USA today R&B/ Hip-hop was the top genre of 2017 in the United States. The beginning of hip hop in the early 70’s caught the attention of many people. Brand managers from companies such as Adidas saw it as an opportunity to use hip hop to advertise their products. This is how fashion began to be influenced. Groups like Run DMC started to make songs like, “My Adidas” which caused their fans to buy their shoes selling out fast.

Rappers would wear whatever they wanted and their mode of clothing would catch the eye of many people who would in turn copy their specific style. Everybody in the streets would be wearing in the same style as they saw the rapper in. this is how brands like fubu, phat farm, g-unit and others came to be popular.

No matter the time fashion was still evolving. Besides the quality of music changing, rappers have come up with new and interesting ways of changing the games style. In today’s society there is a wide variety of brands in fashion, for instance, there is Nike, Reebok, Tommy Hilfiger, Adidas and many other more. Companies like Adidas use these artists such as Kanye West to help promote their new lines. When Adidas was making shoes with West that’s all the community was talking about, West being one of the most influential rappers out there he created a boost in the Adidas stocks. In hip-hop over 100 rappers have had an endorsement deal with a company for a shoe or clothing showing that there isn’t just a couple of people changing fashion but a ton of them are. The influence on fashion is just so immense and it continues to grow each and every day.
